Srivilliputhur Divya Desam is a popular Hindu Temple and one of the 180 Divya Desam, the most important abodes of Lord Vishnu and is the birthplace of two of the most important Aalvars (Saints) in the Vaishnavite tradition, Periyazhvaar and Aandal. The temple is located about 74 Km from Madurai.
The primary landmark of Srivilliputhur is 12 tiered tower structure dedicated to the Lord of Srivilliputhur, known as Vatapathrasayee. The tower of this temple rises 192 feet height and is the official symbol of Government of Tamilnadu.
Another wonder is Srivilliputhur is Chariot which runs on AADI PURAM. Srivilliputhur is well known for its ancient heritage and devotional contributions.
The Goddess Aandal (An Avathar of Booma Devi- Soodikodutha Sudarkkodi) took birth in this place and she had a PURE LOVE on Lord Vishnu and wished to marry him. Aandal, of her pure devotion and Love, wrote & sung THIRUPPAVAI on Lord Vishnu in the winter season - Tamil month MARGALI. She got married & melted with Lord Vishnu.
The important festivals of Srivilliputhur are Car Festival (Ther Thiruvizha) which happens on the Birthday of SRI AANDAL in the months of July – August. The Tamil month of Margali (December- January) is very special here. Sri Aandal marriage (Thiru Kalyanam) is also celebrated with enthusiasm.
